Dental Cleaning Process

Dental cleanings, also known as oral prophylaxis, are part of your routine dental checkups. Everyone’s teeth are a little different, so we tailor your cleanings to fit your specific needs, but cleanings all follow a similar pattern. Our dental cleanings begin with an oral exam to check your overall oral health and search for problem areas. Then, one of our dentists or highly trained dental hygienists uses specialized instruments to gently remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. We begin with an ultrasonic device, cooled by water, that emits vibrations to loosen larger pieces of tartar that are gently rinsed away. Next, we use hand tools called curettes to manually remove smaller deposits from tooth surfaces. Using a low-speed rotary brush with a soft rubber tip, we finish by polishing your teeth, which helps smooth surfaces and remove stains.

Deep Cleaning Teeth

Patients suffering from a gum or periodontal disease typically require more frequent dental cleanings and may even require deep dental cleaning. Similar to a regular dental cleaning, deep cleaning involves more intensive scaling with the addition of root planing. While scaling removes plaque and tartar below the gum line, root planing removes plaque and tartar from your tooth roots to smooth the roots and help your gums reattach to your teeth. This allows your inflamed gums to heal and stay healthy, which improves your overall oral health.
